Awa Ai Indigo was most prominent from the latter half of the Edo period to the Meiji period, and was the largest specialty of Awa (present day Tokushima). With such a cultural background, even in present day Tokushima, many products that incorporate ai indigo are being developed.

This exhibition features aizome indigo dyed noren curtains that were dyed in Tokushima and that are sure to help cool you down during the hot summer. Additionally, the exhibition also displays the efforts of the “Tokushima Prefectural Josei Senior High School Botany, Awa Ai Indigo Specialty Division”, which implements an integrated education consisting of the process of production to sales of authentic aizome indigo dyed products that have been produced through tadeai indigo cultivation and the creation of the dye “sukumo”, as well as natural lye fermentation. This exhibition truly shows the charm and skillful techniques used to make aizome indigo dyed products.
